사진과 책의 만남 - 꼭 한번 봐야할 사진책

 

좋은 카메라가 있다고 사진을 잘찍는건 아니다. 사진은 아는 만큼 보인다. 처음 사진을 시작하면 이런저런 사진 필독서들을 섭렵한다. 그리고 거기에 나온대로 따라 해본다. 그래도 내 실력은 항상 제잘 걸음인것 같은 느낌은 누구나 한번쯤은 가지고 있을 것이다. 여기 소개하는 사진책들은 돈주고 사봐도 안아까울 그런 책들이다. 단지 문제가 있다면 국내에 번역되어 출간되지 않은 관계로 구입시 주문을 해서 기다려야 한다는 불편함이 있다는 정도... 아무리 책을 봐도 사진이 늘지 않은 나 같은 사람들은 꼭 한번 봐야할 책들이다.

The American Wilderness

안셀 아담스의 사진집으로 사진을 보는 순간 광활한 미국의 서부 풍경에 압도당하는 느낌을 받을 것이다. 흑백사진으로 컬러보다 더 풍부한 볼거리를 만들어 낼 수 있는 사람이 안셀 아담스다. 그는 사진가인 동시에 장인이라고 할 수 있다.
 
세밀한 디테일까지 암실에서 살려 냈다. 우리가 알고 있는 존 시스템을 만들어 낸 것도 안셀 아담스다. 『The American Wilderness』는 그가 펴낸 수많은 사진집 가운데 하나이다. 『Yosemite and the High Sierra』, 『Our National Parks』 등도 풍경 사진, 흑백 사진에 관심 있는 사진가들이면 눈여겨보면 좋을 사진집 중 하나이다. 그러나 아쉽게도 이 사진집을 보려면 영문판을 구입하셔야 한다. 국내에서 번역되어 판매되는 안셀 아담스의 책은『The Negative』밖에 없기 때문이다.

The Americans

사진집의 고전, 로버트 프랭크 『미국인』이다. 1년 동안 자동차 여행으로 미국 전역을 여행하면서 찍은 사진들을 모은 사진집 『미국인』의 초판이 프랑스(1958)와 미국(1959)에서 출판된 지 50년이 흘렀다. 현대 사진에 지대한 영향을 끼친 로버트 프랭크의 『미국인』에 대해 마틴 파는 한마디로 축약한다.

“로버트 프랭크에게 영향을 받지 않은 사진가가 어디 있겠냐”고. 50주년 기념판으로 나온 2008년판은 초판의 형식과 함께 잭 케루악의 서문을 그대로 유지한다. 로버트 프랭크가 편집에 직접 참여하여, 두 개의 이미지를 교체했다. 사진집 50주년을 맞아 뉴욕의 메트로폴리탄 미술관에서는 9월 22일부터 2010년 1월 3일까지 기념전을 열 예정이다.

The Photobook I, II

마틴 파와 게리 베드져가 함께 만든 역작. 사진집에 관심이 많다면 이 책은 백과사전, 색인과 같은 역할을 한다. 2004년 1권이 나온 이후 2006년 2권까지 출간됐다. 마틴 파는 일본에 갈 일이 있으면 도쿄의 고서점과 갤러리를 돌면서 대량으로 사진집을 구입해 가는 ‘일본 사진집 광’.

그래서 『The Photobook II』에는 전후 일본 사진집에 대한 섹션이 따로 있을 정도지만, 국내 사진가의 사진집에 대해선 전혀 언급이 없다는 것에서 아쉬움이 남는다. 사진집에 대한 전반적인 지식을 습득하거나, 사진집을 수집하려는 컬렉터들에게는 필수 아이템이라고 할 수 있다.

Africa

사진으로 접하는 아프리카의 모습은 보통 기아와 전쟁, 원시, 밀림, 초원, 동물들에 대한 것이다. 사진 때문에 오히려 아프리카에 대한 편협한 시각을 가지게 되었는지도 모른다. 세바스티앙 살가도의 『Africa』 사진들은 머릿속에 담아 두었던 이미지들보다 훨씬 강렬하다. 같은 주제라도 그의 시선은 상상 이상을 뛰어넘는 사진을 보여 준다. 거친 입자를 가진 흑백 사진 속 아프리카는 에너지가 소용돌이친다. 『Africa』뿐 아니라 『Workers: An Archaeology of the Industrial Age』나 『Sahel: The End of the Road』 등도 함께 보면 좋을 사진집이다. ‘슬프고 아름답다’는 말이 되지 않는 표현이 그의 사진에서만큼은 예외다.
